Spring 2009 Trend Reports on the RUNWAY By MILAN HEMMINGWAY
The collections were hijacked by headlines of impending economic doom, but credit crisis or not, the shows went on. As ever, they produced enough sartorial derring-do (geometric construction, goddess dressing, a gloriously trashy eighties revival) to tempt even the most prudent among us to unlock our wallets. And failing that, there were even some real-life notions, including a few fresh takes on dressed-up athletic wear. Here, the season's top trends
depression chic
geometry lessons
goddess worship
marrakech express
sporting goods
trash and vaudeville
DEPRESSION CHIC TREND
Who needs economists? With an insight that's downright uncanny, designers worked both sides of the crash of 1929, turning out glittery flapper frocks (Alberta Ferretti, Aquilano.Rimondi) and faded sack dresses (Burberry, Bottega Veneta) in equal measure. On the one hand, Jil Sander's Raf Simons fringed not just dresses but suits, too; on the other, Marc Jacobs found himself at home on the prairie.
GEOMETRY LESSONS TREND
Call it living in 3-D. This season, designers indulged their urge to bend, fold, twist, and otherwise manipulate fabric in ever bolder (and bigger) ways. Sleeves at Dolce & Gabbana evoked Minnie Mouse ears, while the dresses at Calvin Klein gave new meaning to the term boxy. Even Oscar de la Renta experimented with the trend, whipping up skirts with a permanent kick ruffle above one knee.
GODDESS WORSHIP TREND
In shaky times, it never hurts to go with what works. And what works is goddess dresses. Light and airy at Marchesa, like liquid mercury at Yves Saint Laurent, and accented with jewels at Malandrino and Monique Lhuillier, Grecian draping made waves on the runways, and it'll generate plenty of heat on the red carpets, too.
MARRAKECH EXPRESS TREND
Ali Baba pants at Ralph Lauren, djellabas at Gucci, turbans everywhere from Dries Van Noten to Paul Smith—the Spring runways were as shimmering and vibrant as a Moroccan souk. And there were as many slouchy, sexy silk jumpsuits as there are stars in an Arabian night sky.
SPORTING GOODS TREND
John Galliano flashes his six-pack abs on the catwalk, and there's a certain American mega-talent who'll flex his pecs for anybody with a camera. If designers have their way, we'll all be getting in shape come spring. Running pants, hoodies, and bodysuits hit the runways at Louise Goldin, Missoni, and Michael Kors, respectively, while glorified boxing gear made an appearance at Kris Van Assche. Not that we're advocating breaking a sweat in these clothes: Utilitarian they may be, but they're much too pretty for the gym.
TRASH AND VAUDEVILLE TREND
Leave it to a new generation of designers—Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, and London's Meadham Kirchhoff, included—to revitalize the eighties, a decade most of us were happy to say goodbye to forever. Shoulder pads? If Balmain's Christophe Decarnin is involved, bring 'em on. Ditto ripped denim and shredded lace. They're back, all right, but these aren't the Wall Street eighties; this time around they're positively 8th Street.

BIGGEST FASHION & WINE Conglomerate LVMH • Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy
LVMH Moët Hennessy • Louis Vuitton S.A. (Euronext: MC), usually shortened to LVMH, is a French holding company and one of the world's largest luxury goods conglomerates. It is the parent of around 60 sub-companies that each manage a small number of prestigious brands. These daughter companies are, to a large extent, run autonomously. The group was formed after mergers brought together champagne producer Moët et Chandon and Hennessy, a leading manufacturer of cognac. In 1987, they merged with fashion house Louis Vuitton to form the current group.
The group is partly owned by the Christian Dior group, and Bernard Arnault is Chairman and CEO of both companies. His successful integration of various famous aspirational brands into the group has inspired other luxury companies into doing the same. Thus Gucci (now part of the French conglomerate PPR) and Richemont have also created extended portfolios of luxury brands. The oldest of the LVMH brands is wine producer Château d'Yquem, which dates its origins back to 1593.

Louis Vuitton Stephen Sprouse Collection (release jan 9,2009)
stephen sprouse collection for lv is gonna sell off him and marc jacobs teamed up for luggage, accessories and many more...iam gonna cop some stuff history in the making fashionistas all over the world.
Stephen Sprouse (September 12, 1953 - March 4, 2004) was a fashion designer and artist credited with pioneering the 1980s mix of "uptown sophistication in clothing with a downtown punk and pop sensibility" .
Stephen Sprouse's initial Day-Glo bright, sixties-inspired, graffiti-printed fashion collections for men and women wowed fashion editors, store buyers, and fashionistas alike, but he always had mixed business success. His initial collections (1983 - 1985) were huge critical hits, sold at only the best stores (his 1983 collections were sold exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel in New York City on a small scale). To much surprise in the fashion and retail communities, Sprouse declared bankruptcy in June 1985 (even though his base of influential fashion editors and high-end stores were firmly in place). Sprouse cited production, late deliveries to stores, management and financial problems in an interview with Womens Wear Daily shortly after he closed his initial business.
Sprouse informally showed a Fall 1985 collection to buyers and the press at his new showroom in Union Square on Broadway - the last location of Andy Warhol's infamous "Factory" lofts. A runway presentation at Club USA in NYC was initially planned (and largely promoted) for its grand opening. Subsequently, the show was cancelled; a Stephen Sprouse Incorporated representative stated at the time that the show was canceled due to the company relocating to the new Union Square location.
Sprouse referred to his Fall 1985 collection as being "more hippie weird" and seventies-inspired, with bell-bottom trousers, psychedelic prints, and maxi skirts, but lacked the funds and staff to produce the apparel.
Sprouse was initially noted for using high-quality, expensive, custom-dyed/screen-printed fabrics (his woolens were sourced by the high-end Italian textile house Agnona) for his earliest collections. Sprouse personally did the graffiti that adorned many of his very earliest garments (1983, early 1984).

One of my favorite movies is BLOW
Based on a true story, Blow chronicles the high-speed rise and fall of George Jung (Johnny Depp, Sleepy Hollow), who became the largest importer of Colombian cocaine to the United States, forever changing the face of drugs in America. Set in the decadent 70's and 80's, Blow traces George Jung's partnership with Pablo Escobar, one of the most infamous and dangerous drug lords in history. Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) Penelope Cruz (All The Pretty Horses) and Paul Reubens (Mystery Men) also star in this riveting film.
DVD Release: April 6, 2001
Directed by: Ted Demme
Starring: Johnny Depp, Ray Liotta, Penelope Cruz, Paul Reubens
